Privacy Policy

FairShake is built around the principle of collecting as little personal information as possible. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, and how to delete it.

What we collect

• Email address — when you sign up. Used only to send the sign-in link and (rarely) to email you about service-impacting changes. We never sell, share, or use it for marketing without your explicit opt-in.
• A referral code we generate for you — random 6-character string. Not derived from anything personal.
• Usage records — for each analysis or scan you run, we log a timestamp, what kind of action it was, the marginal cost we incurred, and (optionally) the category we detected. We use this to enforce per-user caps and to understand product use in aggregate.
• The marketplace listings you explicitly submit — title, price, photos, seller info, description. We process these to give you a verdict; we cache comp-pricing data we look up on your behalf (this is aggregate data, not tied to you).
• If you upgrade to a paid tier — Stripe stores your payment information; we store only a Stripe customer ID, a subscription ID, and your current tier. We never see your card number.

What we do NOT collect

• Your name, address, phone number, or any other contact info beyond email.
• Persistent IP addresses. We use a transient hash of your IP for rate-limiting only; the hash is not stored long-term.
• Browsing history beyond the URLs you explicitly paste or scan with our extension.
• Analytics / marketing / tracking cookies. The only cookies we set are the session cookies needed for sign-in.
• Data from third-party trackers (Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, etc). We don't use any.

The browser extension

The FairShake extension runs on marketplace listing pages and search-results pages (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp). It reads what's visible on the page only when you click the Analyze or Scan button. Nothing is sent to FairShake's servers in the background. The extension piggybacks on your fairshake.app sign-in session — it doesn't store credentials itself.

How long we keep it

• Account data: until you delete your account.
• Magic-link tokens: deleted within 24 hours of expiry (15-minute lifetime).
• Sessions: 30 days from last use, then auto-deleted.
• Usage records: kept indefinitely for aggregate stats, BUT — see below — these are de-identified when you delete your account.

Deleting your account

Open your account page (top-right of the app), scroll to the bottom, and click Delete my account. This will:

• Delete your email, your sessions, any magic-link tokens, your referral rewards, and your analysis history.
• Anonymize your usage records by setting the user identifier to NULL. The records survive as un-attributable rows so our aggregate usage stats stay accurate, but nothing in them points to you.

Third parties

We use a few services to operate FairShake. Each gets the minimum data needed to do its job:

• Anthropic — receives the listing text/photos you submit to generate the verdict prose. They don't get your account info.
• Apify — receives anonymized search queries (brand + model) to fetch comp prices. They don't get your account info.
• Resend — receives your email address only when sending you a sign-in link.
• Stripe (when you upgrade) — handles payment. Their privacy policy applies.
• Render — hosts the app. Standard infrastructure provider.

Affiliate links

Some outbound links on FairShake (for example, "see current listings on eBay" or "buy new instead") are affiliate links — if you buy something after clicking, FairShake may earn a commission at no cost to you. Two commitments:

• Commissions never influence verdicts. Most affiliate links appear on negative verdicts (skip / avoid) — we only earn when we've told you not to buy the listing you were looking at.
• When you click an outbound link we log the click (which link, and your account if signed in) to understand which suggestions are useful. The destination site's own privacy policy applies after you leave.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll email signed-in users and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the service after a change indicates acceptance.
